232 - DENNIS MARTINEZ, EXPOS, P

The basics: Dennis Martinez had just completed his third straight All-Star season with the Expos when this card was issued. He won 16 games for the fourth time in his career, the most he won for any single season.

This is the first of three appearances for Martinez in the 1993 Upper Deck set.

Card thoughts: Nice close-up shot of Martinez's wind-up with his name and number on full display. Very pleasing card.

Backs are important in '93 UD: When have you ever seen a shot like this on a baseball card? I did pull this card in 1993 and I remember being charmed by Martinez's enthusiastic bite into an apple. The satin jacket was a bonus.

It also helped thaw my "relationship" with Martinez as a fan. I wanted to like him during his career, but when he was with the Orioles I rooted against his team twice in the World Series (admittedly, in the '83 WS, I wasn't all that into it). Then Martinez went to the Expos and pitched a perfect game against the Dodgers while I was on vacation in Michigan. That made a dent. I didn't start to appreciate "El Presidente" until his Cleveland days.

More from '93: On this date in 1993, Michael Jordan hit yet another one of his famous buzzer-beating shots, sinking a jumper in Game 4 of the NBA Eastern Conference semifinals against the Cavaliers and sending the Bulls to the conference finals
