234 - JOE OLIVER, REDS, C

The basics: Joe Oliver's only card in the 1993 Upper Deck set. He was coming off his most productive season to date, playing in 143 games for the Reds, which would be the most in his 13-year MLB career.

Card thoughts: Joe Oliver had some of the more active catching shots from this baseball card era, though I think not quite as many as Kirt Manwaring. Here I'm guessing that he's trying to keep a base runner from advancing after perhaps making a play at the plate or corralling an errant throw.

You can see his No. 9 necklace, and the back of this card will confirm that is indeed his uniform number.

Backs are important in '93 UD: Oliver gives a parting shot to the umpire after getting rung up on strikes. I doubt we'll see a shot like this again as long as MLB PR has a grip on Topps' exclusive license.

I don't know the opposing catcher, I just mentioned I'm not good on facial recognition once we get into '90s ballplayers.

More from '93: This week in 1993, the song "Sleeping Satellite" by Tasmin Archer hit the Top 40 on the Billboard chart. The song, which came off Archer's debut album, was highly praised and it went to No. 1 on the UK charts. It's a song about space exploration, which I didn't know until researching it just now.
