The basics: Charles Nagy appears in the 1993 Upper Deck set after winning 17 games for the Indians in 1992. He finished seventh in the American League Cy Young Award voting and was an All-Star.
Card thoughts: Nagy looks relaxed in the dugout while wearing that uniform that popped up on an earlier card. I wrote then that it's likely a replica of a Cleveland uniform from 1932, possibly to recognize 60 years of playing at Municipal Stadium.
Backs are important in '93 UD: Nagy is shown batting, which was very unusual for an American League pitcher in 1992.
The write-up mentions that Nagy batted and got a hit in the 1992 All-Star Game, which is true. I watched the video. He hit a bouncing single to shortstop. But the photo is not from that game. In the video, Nagy is wearing a Texas Rangers helmet. The broadcast mentions that the AL had run out of position players so they used Nagy as a batter.
Perhaps this photo is from spring training? Nagy is not listed as having a time at-bat in a regular season game until 1997.
More from '93: This week in 1993, the Proclaimers' song "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" entered the Top 10 at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. It would peak at No. 3 in August.
