244 - RAY LANKFORD, CARDINALS, OF

The basics: Ray Lankford appears on his first of three cards in the '93 Upper Deck set. Lankford improved on a strong rookie season by hitting 20 home runs, driving in 86 and stealing 42 bases in 1992. It is one of the better seasons in his career.

Card thoughts: Burning around the bases -- that's what Lankford was known to do. He also led the league in caught stealing in 1992 with 24. That would be the highest yearly total of his career.

Backs are important in '93 UD: That's a photo that would be right at home in a 1970s Topps set.

Lankford's strikeout total of 147 in 1992 also led the league.

More from '93: On this date in 1993, Blue Jays rookie Willie Cañate hit a walk-off home run against the Royals in Toronto. It was the first and only home run of his career. His major league career consisted of just that season, getting 47 at-bats in 38 games. The feat is mentioned on the back of his only Topps card.
