The basics: John Kruk makes an appearance after his second of three straight All-Star seasons. He'll show up later in the set in a group photo.
Card thoughts: Kruk's uniform contains the appropriate amount of dirt for a member of the early 1990s Philadelphia Phillies. He made a well-documented head-first slide during a game against the Reds that was shown during his interview with David Letterman in 1992, but this picture isn't from that game (different uniform).
Backs are important in '93 UD: Kruk is wearing a 1942 throwback uniform that was used by the Phillies during a "Turn Back the Clock" game against the Giants on May 3, 1992 in Candlestick Park. The Phillies won the game 12-3 with Mariano Duncan going 5-for-5.
Kruk finished third in the National League batting race in 1992 and was entering a legendary season as the Phillies would go from sixth-place in 1992 to the World Series in 1993.
More from '93: On this date in 1993, bass player Randy Hobbs was found dead in a hotel room in Dayton, Ohio, at age 45. Hobbs played in The McCoys ("Hang On Sloopy) during the 1960s and then with the Edgar Winter Group during the first half of the 1970s. He also played with Jimi Hendrix, Montrose and Rick Derringer.
