The basics: Andy Stankiewicz makes his lone appearance in the '93 Upper Deck set after, by far, his most productive season in the major leagues, which was also his rookie year.
This is the last time Stankiewicz gets a card in Upper Deck until 1998.
Card thoughts: Stankiewicz is wisely using his sunglasses. I am often amazed by the fielders who stare up in the bright sun for a tiny white ball with glasses on top of their caps. How do they do it?
Backs are important in '93 UD: The write-up hints at Stankiewicz's second-half slide in 1992 as that .290 average at the All-Star break became a .268 average by season's end. Also, it tells you where the Yankees were in the early '90s with mentions of Mike Gallego and Pat Kelly.
Stankiewicz got into coaching after his playing career, first in the minors and then in college. He's now the head coach for USC.
More from '93: On this date in 1993, the Phillies' Kim Batiste hit a walk-off double that scored John Kruk with the winning run for a 4-3 lead over the Braves in Game 1 of the NLCS.

Another key event from 10/6/93 = MJ retired from basketball
ReplyDeleteStanky the Yankee! He was a fan favorite for a little while there, the prototypical plucky little guy who punches above his weight for a bit.
