259 - BRETT BUTLER, DODGERS, OF

The basics: Brett Butler makes a splash in his only card in the 1993 Upper Deck set. He just completed his fifth straight year of receiving MVP votes.

Card thoughts: A very pleasing card in my eyes. I like how the ball from the pick-off throw appears like it's hit Butler's wrist but is actually traveling toward the glove.

The regular first baseman for the Padres in 1992 was Fred McGriff. That obviously isn't McGriff. Thanks to retrosheet, I was able to determine that Phil Stephenson played first base for the Padres during a day game in San Diego on June 23, 1992. I never would have been able to identify Stephenson by face.

Backs are important in '93 UD: Butler has changed ballparks but he's still on the road, this time in San Francisco, rounding third with the retired numbers of Carl Hubbell (11) and Willie Mays (24) on the fence at Candlestick Park.

More from '93:  This week in 1993, the song "Hey Mr. DJ," by Zhané hit the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.
