14 - CRIS COLON, STAR ROOKIE

The basics: I feel like a broken record, but it's another guy who burst upon the card scene in 1993. Upper Deck, Topps, Donruss and Score all featured Cris Colon on a card for the first time in '93. Bowman beat them to the punch, as usual, with a card in 1992.

Upper Deck's idea of starting the set with a bunch of newbies may not have been the greatest approach. My readership numbers are a testament to that. Down, down, down ever since Mike Piazza.

Card thoughts: One of the cooler photos so far with Colon and company staring at an infield pop-up. I don't know who the player is to the left, Jeff Huson? I'm not familiar with early '90s Rangers infielders on sight.

Backs are important in '93 UD: Such glowing words and so, so wrong. Cris Colon would not assume the shortstop role for the Rangers in 1993 or ever. You're looking at his career MLB stats right on the card back. And the revolving door at shortstop would continue for the Rangers right until Alex Rodriguez showed up eight years later.

More from '93: Victoria Justice, actor, singer and darling of the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, was born today in 1993. Happy 30th birthday!

  1. OMG, Victoria is 30?!? Wow I feel old lol. I liked her a lot more than that airhead who somehow became a lot more famous :/

Texas must have had a black hole at shortstop; those aren't impressive minor league numbers in '92 so I'm not surprised Colon never made it back to the show.

  2. I think the other guy is Jeff Frye.

  3. Yeah, it's been tough to comment so far, at least for me, if only because I don't remember any of these guys.

  4. Can't say I'm familiar with Cris Colon or Victoria Justice... but I agree the action shot is pretty nice. I envy fans who are able to recognize players in the background by sight. 99.9% of the time, I have to do some serious research.
