The basics: Melvin Nieves' first appearance in a major release was in 1992 Bowman. But after his 1992 minor league season, every card company couldn't wait to include him in their sets in '93. He appears in at least 18 different sets, including a few inserts.
Card thoughts: Pretty typical busting-out-of-the-box pic. Nieves vaguely rang a bell for me when I pulled out this card but I couldn't remember why, until I figured out that he was the main prospect in the Fred McGriff-to-Atlanta trade.
Backs are important in '93 UD: You can see just about the whole bio is about Nieves' 1992 season. He hadn't done much prior to that, although he started playing pro ball as a 16-year-old. He wouldn't finally "stick" in the majors until 1995 with the Padres and 1996 and 1997 with the Tigers, reaching 20 home runs each year with Detroit.
More from '93: The No. 1 movie in the U.S. on this date in 1993 was "Fire In The Sky," a science-fiction tale of alien abduction, supposedly based on a true story, starring D.B. Sweeney.
I have always loved this card. It has to be the same AB as depicted on his 1993 Bowman card.
ReplyDeleteHadn't heard of that movie... but the story sounded interesting. Watched the trailer though and lost interest quickly. Can't imagine this movie stayed #1 for very long.
ReplyDeleteFire in the Sky was terribly scary to 11-year old me.
