The basics: Mike Trombley made his MLB card debut with Bowman in 1992, then in 1993 every card company was proclaiming him a "star rookie" or "rookie prospect." One of his '93 cards even goes for more than 10 bucks -- but that's because it's a two-sided front with the other side Pedro Martinez.
Card thoughts: This is a rather standard, but pleasing spring training action shot. Look at that concentration. Yet no one in the stands appears to be paying attention.
Backs are important in '93 UD: Although Trombley did eventually give up more hits than innings pitched in the majors -- in 1993, in fact, -- he was a reliable innings-eater in the bullpen for 11 years, nine of those with the Twins. He appeared in more than 70 straight games three straight seasons. Also, today is Mike Trombley's 56th birthday!
More from '93: The popular educational TV series, "Bill Nye, The Science Guy" debuted on this date in 1993 on KCTS, a public television station in Seattle.
I couldn't recall Pedro sharing any card with Trombley, and certainly not one that would sell for $10. Blasted Team Pinnacle inserts lol.
ReplyDeleteInteresting that you would end up posting this on his birthday. I've done that a couple times by happenstance, just researching a player and coming across their birthday. Jim Thome and Jason Spezza IIRC, maybe another one too.
If that photo were taken today, everybody would be shown staring down at their phone.
