The basics: Javy Lopez popped up on cards everywhere in 1993 after appearing only in Bowman in 1992. Lopez also has the honor of being the final card in the Star Rookie subset. Good news -- all 28 readers of mine -- we move onto a new subset with the next post!
Card thoughts: I wasn't aware until looking at this card that there is no team reference on the front of the Star Rookie cards. This would be an excellent photo for a nonlicensed card.
Backs are important in '93 UD: Lopez appeared in one game in the 1992 postseason, in the NLCS, so his playoff contribution that year was fairly slight. Same goes for all of 1993 when he played in just eight games for the Braves. He became regular behind the plate in 1994 and would be there for Atlanta through 2003.
More from '93: The Waco siege on the Branch Davidian compound was 30 years ago today. Not going to get any more into that except to say, a whole lot of nonsense then and whole lot of nonsense since, from every side.
As much as I enjoy collecting rookie cards... I'm even more excited to hear your thoughts on the community heroes.
ReplyDeleteFinished his career with an 18 game stint in Boston!
ReplyDeleteJavy had some great years of offensive production!
ReplyDeleteYou're right on this photo making a lot of sense for Panini. Too bad that no one in Panini's design department had some 1993 UD Baseball sitting around for inspiration. It's also unfortunate that Topps put Javy's rookie card in 1991 Bowman and regulated this to just being his first UD card. This would have been a very popular rookie card at the time based on the photograph alone.
ReplyDelete28 readers for a set blog being done 2023 seems pretty good. Heck, two of my blogs only average about half of that, of course they're being done by me, and not you, so that's probably why. Not being overly familiar with this set, I'm curious to see what'll be coming next.
ReplyDeleteJust bought this card at the show a week ago.
