41 - TEAMMATES CHECKLIST

The basics: We're at card No. 41 and we still haven't reached a regular individual player base card. This card kicks off the third subset in 1993 Upper Deck, celebrating teammates. It's probably one of '93 UD's most noted subsets.

Card thoughts: This card has puzzled me for a long time. I don't know what is happening. Joe Carter is accepting a drink from Mark McGwire and ... is not happy about it? Is telling him to shut up? Also, they're obviously on different teams, how is this about "teammates"? Maybe it's a photo from the All-Star Game, which would explain the cameraman.

Also, you can't see the cameraman fully but he is the most early '90s-looking aspect of this photo.

Backs are important in '93 UD: There is a view of the cards in the Teammates subset but it doesn't tell you much about who is featured on the cards. I'm glad it identifies the players on the front.

More from '93: On this date in 1993, Prince changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol to celebrate his 35th birthday. He then became known as "the artist formerly known as Prince."

  2. Sorry. It looks like it might have been BP or something for the All Star Game HR Derby in San Diego.

    1. Upper Deck did like having the weird cards from time to time, eh?

  4. 1:20 in this video - here is the actual moment, probably filmed from the camera we see in this photo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9Czguk4WbQ

    1. Thanks Bo! Without that clip... I certainly thought it Carter was telling McGwire to step back or something.

  5. All that cameraman is missing to complete his look was a fanny pack.
