45 - YOUTHFUL TRIBE, TEAMMATES

The basics: Five players to go through here, all showing up in the set for the first time on this blog. Albert Belle will show up twice more in the base set. Kenny Lofton, Sandy Alomar Jr. and Carlos Baerga show up once more. Jim Thome doesn't appear again, which is odd because he's in a bunch of other 1993 sets.

Card thoughts: I am always surprised when I see Albert Belle smiling on a card -- his solo '93 UD card is the chief example of this.

Backs are important in '93 UD: This is a typically glowing report on the back and every single player pictured had star talent, but Cleveland didn't feel the full impact until 1995. In '93, the Indians finished with the exact same record -- 76-86 -- as they did in 1992. Only in '92, they finished fourth and in '93 they finished sixth.

More from '93: The No. 1 alternative music song this week 30 years ago was "Pets" by Porno For Pyros, the band Perry Farrell formed after Jane's Addiction broke up. MTV's 120 Minutes played the hell out of that song.

  1. I can't stand that song. Glad I'm gonna fall asleep in the next hour or so... otherwise I'd risk having it stuck in my head. As for Cleveland... they were loaded with big names. Guess 1993 was a little too early for Manny.

  2. Creepy start to the write-up, given the Olin-Crews-Ojeda boating incident had yet to happen. Those guys went through some nasty times. I wanted them to win so badly in 1995 and 1997 as a result.

  3. Yep, now I have the refrain from "Pets" stuck in my head...

  4. Being this far removed, it's hard to believe, at least for me, that all of these guys were on the same team.
