47 - YANKEE PRIDE, TEAMMATES

The basics: Don Mattingly and Roberto Kelly are each making their first appearance in 1993 Upper Deck with this card. They will each make one more appearance in the set. That's 1993 for you, a world in which Don Mattingly and Roberto Kelly have the equal number of cards.

Card thoughts: So much to like about this Yankee Stadium background. If everything is on the up-and-up about this photo presentation, this picture was taken at 5:24 in the afternoon, according to the scoreboard. There is a batting cage in the outfield and I believe they're practicing for a night game against the Tigers.

The advertising message board reads "Rock Solid Market Wise," which could be some investment firm reference but perhaps UD is making a commentary on the card investment value of Kelly and Mattingly.

Backs are important in '93 UD: The very last line of this write-up nearly made me laugh out loud. That pretty much sabotaged the whole theme of the card.

More from '93: Thirty years ago, Radiohead was making its first impact in the U.S. The band's debut album, Pablo Honey, was released in the U.S. in April 1993 and the single "Creep" made its debut on the Billboard Hot 100 thirty years ago this week.

  1. Rock Solid Market Wise was Prudential (they use the Rock of Gibraltar in their advertising). I can still hear the voice saying that line in the commercials. Also see Hitachi, Citibank and Bon-Ton in there.

  2. Upper Deck should have just left that last line out. Back then... fans and collectors might have said something. But 30 years later... most people would not have bothered to check if Kelly was still with the team.
