The basics: Scott Livingstone cards were at their peak in 1993 as he played in what would be a career-high 117 games for the Tigers in 1992. He even got on one of those Fleer Rookie Sensations cards that will still cost you a buck or two. Seems a bit steep for Scott Livingstone.
Card thoughts: Did he get it all? Maybe? Livingstone hit four home runs in '92. Do you ever think how weird some of these bolting-out-of-the-box shots would look if you couldn't see the bat drop?
Backs are important in '93 UD: Travis Fryman was moved to short because Alan Trammell broke his ankle. The Tigers then moved Tony Phillips to third but also called up Livingstone, who did well enough that Phillips could play at the half-dozen other positions he could play. Livingstone lasted with Detroit until 1994 when he was traded to the Padres.
More from '93: Thirty years ago today, Randy Johnson reached 300 strikeouts for the first time in his career. It came against the A's in an extra-innings loss for the Mariners. Johnson would strike out 300 five more times in his career.
I didn't even notice the bat at first and was gonna say something about the weird shot, then I saw your mention of it, scrolled back up and saw it for myself. Even with the bat in the shot, it's still kind of weird looking card.
ReplyDeleteIt's a little weird that there aren't more 300 strikeout seasons by pitchers in an era where so many hitters are striking out. It looks like only Cole, Sale, Scherzer and Kershaw have accomplished the feat since Johnson and Schilling both did it in 2002. Even weirder... is that Johnson did it four straight seasons from 1999 to 2002.
