The basics: This is the last of six straight cards of pitchers in the '93 Upper Deck set. It's also Rick Sutcliffe's only card in the set.
Card thoughts: The image of Sutcliffe's glove arm going across his face makes it appear as if he's clean-shaven (though if you stare close you can see a bit of beard). It's interesting how that's the default image in my head.
Backs are important in '93 UD: This card arrives after Sutcliffe's first full season with the Orioles. He'd spend two years with Baltimore before moving to St. Louis for one final year. I think of Sutcliffe as a Dodger first, naturally, followed by the Cubs, then the Indians, then the O's. But thanks to the junk wax era, he's probably got more cards with the Orioles than any team except the Cubs.
More from '93: On this day in 1993, Martin Luther King Jr. Day was observed for the first time in all 50 U.S. states.
I remember him mostly with the Cubs. After looking up his career on Baseball Reference... it makes sense because he played in Chicago from 1984 to 1991 and I was a pretty avid collector during that time frame.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite pitcher, cemented the day he came to the defense of Andre Dawson after The Hawk was hit in the face by Eric Show.
ReplyDeleteThis is another one too where UD positioned his hat just right with their name. It doesn't say anything, but does create an interesting look.
