93 - RANDY VELARDE, YANKEES, IF

The basics: Randy Velarde's first and only appearance in the 1993 Upper Deck set. Velarde gets the coveted card number that matches with the year of the set.

Card thoughts: Surprisingly, this is the first "turning two" card in the set, I thought we would've hit one by now. But we won't have to wait long for the next one.

If the player sliding in is a Minnesota Twin (judging by the colors and the pinstripes), then Scott Leius wore No. 31 in 1992.

Backs are important in '93 UD: The stats show that 1992 was Velarde's most-active season thus far in his career. It was his first season playing at least 100 games.

More from '93: On this date in 1993, North Carolina defeated Cincinnati 75-68 to advance to the NCAA Tournament Final Four. North Carolina would go on to win the tournament for the third time in its history.

  2. Since most of this set is new to me, I'm really enjoying all of the action shots.
