The basics: This is the first of two Luis Sojo cards in the '93 Upper Deck set. We won't get to the second one for a looooong time.
Card thoughts: It's the second straight card showing a play at second, though it doesn't appear to be a double play turn, unless it's one of those started by the first baseman.
As for the runner, Oakland A's batters in 1992 who had a name that ends in an "E" were Mark McGwire and Jerry Browne. I have serious doubts that's McGwire, so Browne it is. His uniform number at the time was 30, and that seems to fit, too.
Backs are important in '93 UD: This is what Upper Deck brought to collectors in the '90s, guys wearing towels on their head. I don't think even '80s Fleer had that.
Sojo would go on to be known as a utility guy for the Yankees, but at this moment he was showing up in a 100-plus games per year.
More from '93: On this date in 1993, the University of Maine men's hockey team won the NCAA championship for the first time. This happened when I was covering college hockey, so it's a notable team in my mind. But the team also featured Paul Kariya, Jim Montgomery and Garth Snow and was coached by the late Shawn Walsh.
Paul Kariya was a monster at Maine, one and done IIRC.
ReplyDeleteI kind of miss the late '80s/early '90s Angels uniforms. The 'A' on Sojo's cap has that perfect placement inside the Upper Deck lettering, like some others I've seen on this blog.
Wonder if it's Browne trying to steal second...
ReplyDeletePaul Kariya was the man. I remember ordering a bunch of the UD Czech boxes that were on clearance back in the late 90's from a Tuff Stuff ad... just to pull his card.
ReplyDeleteP.S. 30 is on the back of the helmet.
Ha, there's no way that that's McGwire.
