118 - BILL SWIFT, GIANTS, P

The basics: Bill Swift makes just one appearance in the 1993 Upper Deck set after appearing twice in the '92 set, because he had changed teams prior to the '92 season and UD liked to update with an extra card of the player in the set.

Card thoughts: Standard pitching shot (every card of Swift in 1993 shows him pitching, except for the Donruss Diamond Kings insert, Mother's Cookies and Milkbone). At least Upper Deck allows you to view Bill Terry's retired number on the outfield fence at Candlestick Park. Also nice placement of the pitched ball.

Backs are important in '93 UD: Pitchers Bunting! ... Wow, this set really is old.

Swift led the National League in ERA in 1992. It was foreshadowing for 1993 in which he'd go 21-6 for the surging Giants and finish second in the Cy Young Award voting.

More from '93: The No. 1 song on the U.S. alternative charts this week in 1993 was "Soul to Squeeze" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I barely remember this song, but I'm not a fan of the RHCP.

Comments

  1. I remember "Soul To Squeeze" because it was released off the Coneheads soundtrack and the video had a Chris Farley cameo.

  2. Didn't recognize Soul To Squeeze by the name of the title... but did as soon as I played it.

  3. I've always liked the RHCP (well, not their *really* early stuff). I took a break for about 5-6 years, came back, and listened to their new stuff - quite good.

  4. The Chili Peppers are among my least favorite bands of all-time.
