133 - RAMON MARTINEZ, DODGERS, P

The basics: Somewhat surprisingly, this is Ramon Martinez's lone card in the 1993 Upper Deck set. The '92 season was Martinez's first down year, but he was one cool cat in 1990 and much of '91.

Card thoughts: Martinez and Brett Butler are engaged in a celebratory exchange, but I'm not quite sure exactly what. Is it a forearm bash like the Bash Brothers? Martinez was so thin and wiry and I think that might break him, perhaps that's why it looks so awkward.

Backs are important in '93 UD: It was a bad year for everyone on the Dodgers in 1992, but Martinez's season couldn't have helped. This was his lone 4-and-above ERA season until the last two years of his career. 1993 would continue to be a struggle as he led the league in walks.

More from '93: On this date in 1993, unbeaten Notre Dame defeated previously unbeaten Florida State, 31-24. It was labeled the "Game of the Century," which has been used more than a few times in college football.
