The basics: This is just the second time the Expos have shown up in the set. The first Expo was back at card No. 60. This is Ken Hill's lone card in the set.
Card thoughts: A nice look at a pitcher's focus and concentration at the moment he sends the ball on its path. The baseball has knocked out the letter "U" before reaching the plate.
Backs are important in '93 UD: The '92 season was Hill's first significant, take-notice year after coming to the Expos from the Cardinals in a deal for Andres Galarraga. Hill would reach 16 wins two more times but never surpass it.
In general he seems to be a forgotten player for someone of his caliber. He's probably most remembered for a "what could have been" 1994 season as he was on pace for personal bests across the board when the strike hit. He finished second in the Cy Young Award voting behind Greg Maddux.
More from '93: On this date in 1993, the Baltimore Orioles signed free agent first baseman Rafael Palmeiro and the Cleveland Indians added pitcher Dennis Martinez.
Wrote about Hill a few years ago. Had to quickly look it up... but it was how Jose Canseco owned him. In 36 plate appearances, Jose collected 15 hits (4 home runs). But I also knew that he was a part of Expos history, because Topps included him in the 50th anniversary of the Expos autograph set back in 2019.
