The basics: This is the first of three cards that feature Matt Williams in the 1993 Upper Deck set. He will appear on a couple other cards later with teammates.
Card thoughts: Speaking of teammates, there are a couple on Williams' solo card, Kevin Bass at left and Will Clark at right. There appears to be someone else at the far left, you can see his arm. Also, an umpire -- I'm assuming the home plate ump -- is behind Williams. Williams seems to have just crossed home plate after hitting a home run. Was it a two-run home run? A three-run home run? A grand slam? I'll leave it to the sleuths to decide.
Backs are important in '93 UD: Another guest appearance on the reverse as Phillies catcher Darren Daulton is tagging Williams at the plate. I wonder if this card holds the '93 UD record for most players featured on a player's individual card?
1992 was a down year for Williams. His .227 average was the lowest of his career as a full-time player. He'd bounce back in '93 though.
More from '93: On this date in 1993, Buffalo Sabres center Pat LaFontaine scored three goals and added an assist in a 5-3 victory over the Calgary Flames. Yes, a sad Sabres fan wrote this.
Think I got it figured out: Assuming this was from a 1992 game, the only game where Clark and Bass would be a part of a home run celebration would be the April 25th game against the Dodgers. Williams hit a homer in the 8th of Tom Candiotti with both Clark and Bass on base. Chances are the arm belongs to Robby Thompson, who had the next at bat.
