148 - CARLOS HERNANDEZ, DODGERS, C

The basics: Carlos Hernandez breaks up a run of 10 straight cards of stars or at least regular starters. Hernandez was a backup catcher for the Dodgers during the era of Mike Scioscia and then Mike Piazza.

Card thoughts: A terrific action shot as it appears that Hernandez has made a diving catch on a foul pop in Dodger Stadium. I don't know if that's exactly what happened, but who cares! Look at that flying catcher's helmet!

Backs are important in '93 UD: The write-up praises Hernandez's prowess against left-handed pitchers. The photo suggests that this is one of Hernandez's three home runs in 1992 and it came against the Cubs at Wrigley Field. But Hernandez didn't hit a home run at Wrigley in '92. He was 0-for-4 on May 31 (the catcher was Joe Girardi) and he was 0-for-1 as a pinch-hitter on Sept. 1 (the catcher was Rick Wilkins).

More from '93: On this date in 1993, the alternative hip hop group Digable Planets released its album "Reachin' (A new Refutation of Time and Space)". The album included the 1993 hit "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)".
