150 - ORLANDO MERCED, PIRATES, 1B

The basics: This is Orlando Merced's only appearance in the 1993 Upper Deck set.

Card thoughts: It's a cool appearance! It is similar to the Hal Morris card that was featured 29 cards ago. Some differences: The Merced photo is not as tight a shot and you can see the ball in the photo under the "R," which is awesome. Also, unlike the Morris card, Merced seems to be getting some competition for that foul ball. Except the one person in the corner covering his head in a panic. But that's a nice contrast to the women behind him, who seem absolutely delighted.

Backs are important in '93 UD: Upper Deck gives you a nice portrait shot that you missed out on with the front.

Merced was entering his most productive season when this card was issued. He would drive in 70 runs on 140 hits and bat .313. He was a key member of my fantasy team in 1993, which tells you a lot about my fantasy team.

More from '93: Today in 1993, the 43rd NBA All-Star Game took place. The West beat the East 135-132 in overtime. Utah Jazz teammates Karl Malone and John Stockton were named MVPs.

  1. Lol. I've been that guy who has freaked out when the ball has been hit in our direction and I'm not sure where it is.
