151 - ROYCE CLAYTON, GIANTS, SS

The basics: Royce Clayton makes his first and only appearance in the 1993 Upper Deck set. He was just starting his career as a full-time shortstop.

Card thoughts: Air Clayton! That is a cool shot that sums up Clayton's reputation as a defensive wizard at short.

Backs are important in '93 UD: Clayton is displaying a throwback uniform in the back photo. It looks like a New York Giant uni.

Clayton's stats aren't much to look at right here, but starting in 1993, he would spend the next 14 years or so as a starting shortstop.

I had an encounter with Clayton that I've mentioned before on the other blog.

More from '93: Have been trying to avoid this because I like to consider this a light-and-breezy blog, but it's a significant moment in 1993 and in history. The World Trade Center bombing took place on this date in '93.

  1. I don't know what it says about me that my first thought was that I thought he came up with the Braves. I was conflating him with Jerry Royster. Only connections are that they were both infielders and they have a syllable in common.

  2. He was one of the Giants top prospects for a few years. Pretty sure I got a chance to watch him play a few times in San Jose.
