160 - JOHN BURKETT, GIANTS, P

The basics: John Burkett's first-and-only appearance in the 1993 Upper Deck set. This is also the fourth Giants card in the last 35 cards. Meanwhile, the Astros have appeared just three times total so far.

Card thoughts: This is the second Giants card in the set thus far showing a player in a New York Giants uniform, circa 1939 likely, judging by the very prominent anniversary patch on Burkett's sleeve.

Also, it's a happy card. It's been awhile since a photo of a player signing has shown up in the set.

Backs are important in '93 UD:
Burkett was a solid starter for the Giants during this period. He was entering the best season of his career when he'd win 22 games for San Francisco in 1993 and finish fourth in the NL Cy Young Award voting.

After fading in the late '90s, Burkett experienced a career rejuvenation with the Braves and then the Red Sox in the early 2000s.

More from '93: The second single off of Duran Duran's self-titled 1993 album hit the Hot 100 this week in 1993. "Come Undone" is my favorite single of the band from this time period.

  1. I don't think he's signing autographs here as that looks like a pencil. Perhaps he's charting pitches?

  2. Ordinary World was the first single off of that album. I was a big fan of Duran Duran in the 80's... especially their early stuff. By the time 1993 rolled around... I had stopped buying all of their albums (Seven and the Ragged Tiger was the last album I bought). However I've gotta say I really liked both of these songs.
