The basics: Tom Gordon was coming off probably his least productive year with the Royals when this card was issued. No problem, Gordon was just five years into a 21-year MLB career.
I distinctly remember being surprised that Gordon was still appearing on baseball cards when I came back to the hobby after a 10-year break. He started his career when I was buying as many 1989 Topps packs as I could and then there he was again in 2006 packs.
Gordon's well-known nickname is "Flash," but I don't know if it appeared on card fronts other than the period between 2003-05 when Topps repeatedly called him Flash Gordon.
Card thoughts: I like resin bag sightings.
Backs are important in '93 UD: Gordon is 5-9 and you do get that low-to-the-ground feel from the photo.
More from '93: The Stereo MC's song "Connected" debuted in the Billboard Hot 100 this week in 1993. And that's all it took for it to get stuck in my head.

Stephen King wrote a book called The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. I don't remember the plot.
ReplyDeleteI seem to remember it being about a girl lost in the woods while camping or on a Girl Scout outing, something like that. I don't recall what the connection to Gordon is though.
DeleteYeah that song has a unique sound.
ReplyDeletea. Interesting that Topps decided to use Flash on Gordon's cards for a few years. I had to run over to COMC to see for myself. Guess I shouldn't be surprised since they used "Rock" on some of Raines cards.
ReplyDeleteb. Dang it. Now that song is stuck in my head too.
Am I the only one with the theme from Flash Gordon in his head now? "He saved every one of us!"
