The basics: Jose Rijo continued to deliver as the ace of the Reds' staff in 1992, winning 15 games for the second straight year, despite continued problems with his pitching elbow. His season was almost equal to the preceding one, but in 1991 he finished fourth in the Cy Young Award voting and in '92 he didn't get a single vote.
Card thoughts: Another photo in Wrigley Field, and another marvelous example of UD using the team logo on the player's hat to replace a letter in the Upper Deck banner.
Backs are important in '93 UD: 🚨PITCHER BATTING! PITCHER BATTING! 🚨. Rijo hit .194 as a batter in 1992 but in 1993 he'd bat .268 and belted a home run.
More from '93: On this date in 1993, Bangles singer Susanna Hoffs married film director and producer Jay Roach (Austin Powers movies, Meet the Parents). They are celebrating their 33rd anniversary.

I really, really miss pitchers hitting. Ohtani doesn't count.
ReplyDeleteJay Roach is a very lucky man.
ReplyDeleteYeah! I've seen Susanna live a bunch of times, both with and without the Bangles--in fact the first show of theirs I ever saw, in 1984, was just posted to the Internet Archive so I'm looking forward to hearing it again. She always puts on a great show. I did meet her once and she was really nice as well.
DeleteVery cool Brett. I never had the opportunity to see her perform live, but I watched her on MTV a fair amount of times.
DeleteI had not realized they were doing that on purpose with the hats. UD did a lot of fun things back then.
ReplyDeleteI recently learned that the Austin Powers movies came from a faux-retro mod band Mike Myers formed with Susanna Hoffs and 90s rocker Matthew Sweet called "Ming Tea". That's the band you see during the scene breaks in the movies.
