134 - DON MATTINGLY, YANKEES, 1B

The basics: This is the second time Don Mattingly has appeared in the set. He showed up with Roberto Kelly in the Teammates subset at card #47.

Card thoughts: A well-composed card. Mattingly seems to be admiring an opposite field shot. I like the puff of dirt generated by his back leg off the back swing.

Backs are important in '93 UD: Look at those stats. 1992 was Mattingly's final top-of-the-line season, although he'd still star for the Yankees for another three more years. Yet, I'm sure that people in 1993 would be stunned to find out Mattingly would be retired by 1996.

Also worth mentioning is how weird it is for Mattingly to have a card number that doesn't end as a 5 or a 0. I know that Upper Deck seldom followed Topps' rule of "hero numbers," but 134 is odd for guy like Mattingly.

More from '93: The No. 1 movie in the U.S. this week in 1993 was "The Three Musketeers," an adaptation of the famous tale starring Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Chris O'Donnell and Rebecca De Mornay.

Comments

  1. I remember that movie being really popular... but have little interest in seeing it myself. Thirty-one years later... I still haven't watched it.

  2. I remember going to a Mariners Yankees game at the Kingdome in 1986 and Mattingly was playing third base.

  3. Great photo on the back but it looks a little awkward, like the ball is about to jam his wrist.
